Legal and Financial Issues Facing Entrepreneurs

The entrepreneurial culture of the Digital Age spawns legions of  dreamers and doers.  Many chase their dreams and eagerly take the plunge: they quit their jobs and launch a start up.

Some start ups succeed.  Many start ups fail. Most start ups face an array of legal, financial and operational challenges.

Our speaker will address some of the  issues entrepreneurs face  when conceptualizing, establishing, financing and then scaling their businesses.

Please bring your questions and scenarios.

This is part of a series of teleconferences and events featuring our speaker.

Crisis Response @ Google

When disaster strikes, people increasingly turn to the internet for information. Google Crisis Response helps ensure the right information is there in these times of need by building tools to collect and share emergency information, and by supporting first responders in using technology to help improve and save lives.

In this presentation, we’ll discuss three essential design principles that take into account uniquely pressing needs in crisis situations:

  • Simple: tools must be familiar and easy to use
  • Open: software must be open for systems to interoperate; data must be open for wide use
  • Standard: technology must be built on agreed-upon standards to enable information sharing and collaboration

We’ll take a technical look at three tools under active development by the Crisis Response team, each grown out of these principles: Crisis Map, Person Finder, and Public Alerts.

Alice Bonhomme-Biais is a Staff Software Engineer at Google.org. She holds a PhD in distributed systems from ENS Lyon, France. In 2005, she joined Google’s New York office to work on search quality for Google Maps. In 2010 she became one of the first software engineers on the Google Crisis Response Team.

Phil Coakley is a Staff Software Engineer at Google.org in NYC, where he works on the Crisis Response Team building systems that make critical information more accessible in times of disaster. Prior to joining Google in 2007, he was involved in a network security startup in the NYC area. Phil has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Columbia University.

A Study of Iteration and Enumberables

As a beginner in ruby, we generally take iteration and enumeration for granted. Methods like each and collect gratefully abstract away the majority of logic required for iteration and enumeration. We get an iterator or yield for free in our blocks and have no idea how.

In this quick 30 minute talk, Avi Flombaum will build every iterator and enumerator in ruby just using the core loop keyword. We’ll learn how to implement the while keyword using loop, then on top of that we’ll implement an each and learn about yield and blocks, on top of that we’ll implement collect, and then we’ll implement the higher level enumerators like inject, any?, all?, none?, select, and reject.

A basic understanding of iteration and then ruby will be helpful.

We’ll hang out after the talk and get a chance to network.

I’m going to try to schedule 1 non-flatiron related event a month from here on in. See you all soon!

PS – we’re only charging $1 to make RSVP’s meaningful. all proceeds are donated to wikipedia.

Also, space gets a little tight, so it might be some standing room.

Co-founder Meetup

So many of the women in this group are entrepreneurs/aspiring entrepreneurs. I’d love to go to an event where people interested in meeting potential co-founders (or just picking the brains of other entrepreneurs) is encouraged.

Long Island Angels to VCs: Investing in Early Stage

Come meet investors representing a NY angel network looking for great companies to invest in.

Long Island Angel Network is a technology- and innovation-focused early-stage and emerging growth fund investing in companies in the $500,000 – $2 million range. LIAN consists of individual angel investors interested in financing such privately held companies or ventures.

LIAN screeners endeavor to select companies for presentation that they judge likely to be of the greatest interest to members, but the Network does not make investment recommendations; investors’ decisions are made individually. LIAN’s goal is to bring our region’s most exciting, promising early stage growth companies together with its most savvy investors.

Long Island Capital Alliance (LICA) assists local companies in raising growth capital

  • Matches businesses seeking venture capital and angel funding to experienced investors in search of emerging companies.
  • Puts investors in touch with small- to mid-size businesses with a high potential for growth.
  • Introduces growing companies to executives and strategic partners.
  • Hosts quality industry-focused Capital Forums in Long Island, NY.
  • Has helped companies raise more than $150 million in financing.

Canrock Ventures is an early stage technology venture capital fund. We focus on turning good technology ideas into great technology businesses. Canrock was founded in 2010 by Jim Estill, Mark Fasciano and Ted Smith.

Marc Alessi is joined the Network in 2011 after a successful career in the New York State Assembly, where he concentrated on policies that would provide incentives for investment in start up companies.  Marc is a corporate attorney by trade, and is of counsel to the Garden City law firm, Jaspan Schlesinger LLP, and a partner in the firms Governmental Affairs Practice- Shelter Rock Strategies where he consults for a number of biotechnology incubators in New York State.

Marc has active investments and sits on the Board of Advisors for a number of Long Island and New York City startup companies in the fields of Information Technology and Biotechnology.  He is also a board member of the Peconic Bay Hospital in Riverhead, and the East End Arts Council of Long Island.  Marc Alessi has founded biomedical device company, SynchroPET.

Corey Massella is a partner of the firm and CEO of Citrin Cooperman’s SEC Solutions Group

Vincent Tang is a Principal with Canrock Ventures where he is responsible for evaluating new investment opportunities and helping portfolio companies with their strategic and operational objectives. Prior to Canrock Vincent was a Principal with Lockwell Investments, where he invested in small-cap companies in enterprise software, industrial technology, and telecom and media. Before Lockwell, he was with Hale Capital Partners and Bear Stearns.

Happy hour to follow at 5pm :)

Friday speaker series brings key thought leaders, investors, executives in an intimate fireside chat format conversational approach to giving entrepreneurs access to trends, ideas, process within large organizations and better understand how things work.

Imagine you had a meeting with these angels and access to ask anything.  The audience is kept small to allow for that engagement. More hard to reach guys are brought each Friday for real conversations.  Come learn about what you can’t “google” to stay updated on what the market wants and share a beer.
