Developing a new product

Ellen Chisa and Steven Benario are both experienced Product Managers. After moving to NYC to work for smaller startups, both noticed that tech companies in New York didn’t seem to be taking advantage of the some of the best practices that Microsoft has developed and evangelized over 30 years of product development.

This introductory-level class will teach you about the product development process from the perspective of a Product Manager. In particular you’ll learn Product Management skills that are useful regardless of your role, and how these skills can be applied to companies and products of all sizes. These key factors include user scenarios, effective specifications, and how to most effectively get sign-off from other stakeholders.

The instructors will also walk through some of the most useful things Microsoft has learned along the way, and how to apply them in a lightweight way to your own product development process. Our goal is to help you combine some of the best parts of what Microsoft has learned over time, with the agility and creativity of the NY startup scene.

Wine, beer and light snacks sponsored by SoTechie.

What’s it like for a woman CEO to raise funding (the real story)

There’s been much talk about fundraising for women lead companies.  There are number of great investors, angel networks, and VCs supporting women startups, but the road is still a difficult one.  This is going to be a frank discussion (no social media) on what its really like for women to be fundraising out there and how to get around the challenges.  We are having CEOs who are fundraising, completed their angel round, and later stage rounds, along with a woman VC.  If you want to know what really goes on in a board room, this is the talk.  No filters.  But also no cameras and cell phones.

Kathleen Utecht – Investment Professional, Comcast Ventures

“It is the innovators who carry mankind forward.”  Young and old; male and female; higher education and none; I’ve watched founders grow rough ideas into businesses which create and define new industries.  The common denominator: drive, hard-work, and constant evolution to shatter the status quo.”

Kathleen sources and identifies new investment opportunities, conducts diligence on potential investments and works closely with Comcast Ventures’ portfolio companies.

Before Comcast Ventures

Prior to joining Comcast Ventures, Kathleen worked in venture capital for Core Innovation Capital and WVP Ventures.  Prior to her venture roles, Kathleen invested in and led Green Rock Entertainment, the start-up toy/game manufacturing company whose main product was Cahootie.  She won Ernst & Young’s Winning Women award for its success. Before her operational adventure, Kathleen was an investment banker in the financial services group of Raymond James and a graduate of General Electric Capital’s Financial Management Program.

Interview w Shafqat Islam, founder & CEO of Newscred

We’re excited to have Shafqat Islam, the founder and CEO of Newscred, join us for our next meetup on August 14.  Newscred has been a startup to watch in NYC for the last several years.  They have tackled the challenge of news and content syndication, and along the way have won both a great customer list and some top venture capital backers.

They also had a big pivot in their early days. You can see a bit of the story on Newscred’s About page. We will dig into their founding story and pivot, and discuss learnings from their journey over the last several years.

This will be in our typical “Inside the Founder’s Studio” format, so please come armed with questions.

Thanks as always to Andres and Meetup for hosting us!

Cheers
