Do you remember the smell of that sun deprived basement room you wrote your first line of code in, while listening to rock, hip hop and the screams of your mom telling you to get out of the house?

Well this is where most of us started their insane but awesome programming journey!

Join us on June 5th for a panel discussion on how CTO’s for well known NYC startups have taken their idea from a small basement, a tiny server and few thousand lines of codes to a fleet of engineers, complex data distribution systems and millions in revenue and investor money.

The panel will touch up on the following:

  • How to start coding and the needed set of skills to master it
  • How to come up with an idea and the vision that fires it all
  • The initial difficulties and limitations you face as a solo developer
  • How to assemble or join a team with various skill set (designers, developers, testers, etc)
  • How to properly test and organize the development cycle
  • How to monetize the product and the responsibility that comes with SaaS software
  • How to know when to scale and fire those who do not bring value to you

Focus on Startups: Equity 101 Primer for Founders and Employees

Hello Crowdies, this free workshop will be the first in an occasional series of workshops and panels with a focus on startups and entrepreneurship.

Cutting through and breaking down the legalese, this class is ideal for first-time startup founders/employees, those contemplating joining a startup, or solo entrepreneurs considering hiring their first employees.

Startup founders will learn about having to create option pools, what investors may require and how this affects the actual valuation of the startup.

Startup employees who receive company stock grants or options will learn the answers to the following questions and more:

  • What is the value of my equity?
  • When can I turn it into money I can put in my pocket?
  • What is a vesting schedule, and why should I care?
  • What is dilution, and how does it impact the value of my equity?
  • What is a capitalization table, and can I see it?
  • What can I ask for when I negotiate my equity compensation?
  • What if I want to change jobs? What can I do with my equity then?

This workshop will be taught by:

Jamie Lee – Girls in Tech NYC Chapter Board Member, Organizer

Jamie Lee first learned about equity while tracking blue chip stocks trading in Asian equity markets as a hedge fund analyst. She then got her startup chops as an MBA analyst intern at Golden Seeds, an angel investment fund that invests in women-led startups, and as Operations Director at Tipping Point Partners, an institutional startup co-founder. She is a Girls in Tech NYC chapter treasurer and event organizer.

She’s been a frequent speaker on the topic of employee equity compensation, with Girls in Tech, wimlink, Docracy, and Digital District. She runs, blogs, and tries to learn something new every day. For this class she has gathered the best insights from leading venture capitalists such as Fred Wilson, Andy Payne, and Brad Feld and has leading startup lawyers for best practices in negotiating startup equity.

Ekaterina Mouratova – founder of The Law Firm of Ekaterina Mouratova, PLLC

Ekaterina focuses her practice on general business and corporate law, securities regulations, intellectual property, and immigration matters. Having comprehensive education both in civil and common law systems and precise understanding of multi-cultural practices allows Ms. Mouratova to successfully represent domestic and international clients.

Ekaterina is a frequent speaker at seminars and author of multiple publications on business law. She is an active member of the New York State Bar Association, American Bar Association, and a pro bono attorney at the New York City Bar Association the Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project (an organization that provides mid- and low-income entrepreneurs with free legal services in their business matters).

Earlier this year, Ms. Mouratova authored and published a book – Business Law for Entrepreneurs. A Legal Guide to Doing Business in the United States. This book is a useful assistant to entrepreneurs, business owners, managers, and other professionals on every stage of their business development, from start-up to the further functioning of the company. Ekaterina’s aim in publishing this book is to give access to vital legal information to a wider audience ranging from starting entrepreneurs to owners of established companies.

McCann Worldgroup: Innovation, Social, Tech and working with agencies

Innovation… What’s going on with social… and how to work with agencies.

So you’ve built your product, you’ve raised your money, and now it’s time to close those strategic deals, get some traction and create growth.  Many startups look to brands and agencies to partner, sell to, and they are interested in the latest in tech as well.  Come here a panel from McCann’s tech, social, and innovation groups talk about what’s up and coming.

They will talk about what drive digital innovation inside the “machine”. Innovation in social, new tech from what brands are looking for and how to come up with creative ideas for what brands want.  As well as what is New media these days and what are game changing companies they are seeing.  They will offer up different perspectives – creative, social, tech to pitching agencies, brands.  Getting deals done.

Happy hour to follow at 5pm :)

Mark Fallows

EVP Creative Technology at McCann New York

I have been focused on exploiting change since my first day in advertising. Working in global, regional and local roles across a broad range of brands (IKEA, UPS, L’Oreal, Nokia, Microsoft, Oracle, Land Rover, Bass Beer, Johnson & Johnson), I have successfully managed multi-disciplinary teams in Europe, Asia and North America. In every instance, I created a culture of

creative problem solving.

In 2006, I was hired to establish McCann London’s digital capabilities and drive digital innovation inside the “machine”. From nothing, I assembled a team of web designers, developers, UX specialists, PM’s, SEO and social media strategists to implement new processes, develop relevant strategies and to help create a range of award winning, integrated, web-centric campaigns. In 2010 I moved to McCann New York to replicate this. Over last year I have been a core part of the team that pitched and won the re-invention of the Ikea Catalogue and the prototype project for Ikea.com.

My knowledge of the industry is broad, my experience and insight into digital and social technologies fuels my vision for how the industry and agencies must evolve.

My goals remain simple; innovate, create great work, keep my team motivated and happy, break rules, explore new ideas, take risks and above all build things.
