G. Darrell Berglund,Esq is an attorney, entrepreneur and business consultant.   Darrell is a graduate of Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School, and Yale University.  A member of the California, New York, and Massachusetts Bars, his practice encompasses business consulting and litigation involving a wide range of business matters.

Darrell’s business career has included stints as supervisor of financial analysis at General Motors  and senior analyst in the corporate finance department at Chevron Corporation.  In addition, he held the position of treasurer of U.S. Leasing Corporation, a $1 billion plus corporation now a part of Ford.

Steve Blank, Four Steps to the Epiphany

Steve Blank has had a 33-year career as a successful businessman, conservationist and teacher. As a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, Steve was part of/or founded eight venture-backed companies. Four of his eight startup companies went public. After he retired, he started new careers in conservation, public service, and teaching. After retiring, Steve moved from being an entrepreneur to teaching entrepreneurship to both undergraduate and graduate students at U.C. Berkeley, Stanford University and the Columbia University/Berkeley Joint Executive MBA program. Steve wrote a book (actually his class text) about building early stage companies: Four Steps to the Epiphany. He followed it in 2012 with his next book; The Startup Owners Manual. The “Customer Development” model that he developed in his book is one of the core themes for these classes. In 2010, he was awarded the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley Haas School of Business. In 2009 Steve was awarded the Stanford University Undergraduate Teaching Award in the department of Management Science and Engineering. In 2007 Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Steve to serve on the California Coastal Commission, the public body which regulates land use and public access on the California coast. Steve currently sits on the board of Startup Weekend and the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV.) Bob Dorf is likely the second most knowledgeable Customer Development expert on the planet, second only to his business partner, co-author and friend of 20 years, Steve Blank, who developed the methodology after retiring from his eighth startup, E.piphany, when it achieved a market cap of $8-billion.  Dorf helped Steve Blank deploy and test the Customer Development process when E.piphany opened its doors with five employees in 1996. Dorf later critiqued the earliest versions of Steve’s Four Steps to the Epiphany mercilessly along the way, and they’ve been friends and colleagues ever since. Dorf lives in Stamford with his wife Fran, a therapist and thrice-published novelist. Rubin is the founder of All Games Productions, All Games Network, and co-founder of the G4 television network, in addition to being a talk show host and television producer. Khosla co-founded Sun Microsystems (SUN is the acronym for the Stanford University Network), along with Stanford classmates Scott McNealy, Andy Bechtolsheim, and UC Berkeley computer science graduate student Bill Joy. Khosla served as the first chairman and CEO of Sun Microsystems from 1982 to 1984, when he left the company to become a venture capitalist. In 1986, Khosla joined the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as a general partner. – we need PowerPoint and executive summary

– deadline is 1 week before the event

- file naming: company name (1 word), underscore, deck or summary

– put both documents in 1 email, do not send separately

4. We will not wait for the guests to arrive. Doors open at 6pm. The event begins  at 6:30pm and ends at 8:30pm.

Thatcher Bell: Gotham Ventures. Early stage software investing in NYC

Thatcher Bell is a Managing Partner at Gotham Ventures. He has spent more than a dozen years in the startup community as a venture capitalist and operator. He focuses on investments in software companies in both consumer and business markets across a variety of industries.

 

Gotham Ventures is part of the DFJ Network, the largest venture capital network in the world. Their portfolio includes companies such as Yipit, Sailthru, Totsy, Altruik, SinglePlatform, and IZEA. Thatcher works closely with Gotham portfolio companies Sailthru, ADstruc, LendKey, EXPO, Verterra, and Widetronix. In addition, Thatcher serves on the Board of Directors of the NY Tech MeetUp, co-chairs the New York chapter of Wharton Private Equity Partners, co-founded Penn Digital, and is a strong supporter of Cornell Tech, Cornell’s new graduate school of applied technology in New York City.

Prior to joining Gotham Ventures, Thatcher Bell was a Senior Analyst at North Hill Ventures, the venture capital affiliate of Capital One Financial, where he was a deal team member for the firm’s investments in DealerTrack (NASDAQ: TRAK), Higher One (NYSE: ONE), and Compete (acquired by TNS). Prior to North Hill, Thatcher held business and corporate development roles at enterprise software vendor OpenPages (acquired by IBM) and SharkTank, an online marketplace connecting lawyers and potential clients.

Thatcher began his career as a consultant at Ernst & Young (now Cap Gemini Ernst & Young). He received a B.S. cum laude in Engineering from Cornell University and an M.B.A. with honors from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
