Legal and Financial Issues Facing Entrepreneurs

The entrepreneurial culture of the Digital Age spawns legions of  dreamers and doers.  Many chase their dreams and eagerly take the plunge: they quit their jobs and launch a start up.

Some start ups succeed.  Many start ups fail. Most start ups face an array of legal, financial and operational challenges.

Our speaker will address some of the  issues entrepreneurs face  when conceptualizing, establishing, financing and then scaling their businesses.

Please bring your questions and scenarios.

Android is the world’s most popular mobile OS with the Play Store growing at an incredible rate. Thousands of new apps are added daily, all trying to get a piece of the pie and turn into the next Angry Birds.

But what is really the best strategy to pursue to consistently generate revenue in this “free” eco system?

We’ll review some of the most popular models currently used by apps in the Play Store, analyze each and try to figure out how to best match the app to the right business model.

The Two-Burger Team: MVPs and Designer-Developer Pairing

We all talk about the need to create an MVP, but what about how we actually accomplish it?

For this session, Jono Mallanyk and Ben Burton, designer and engineer respectively at Neo, are going to discuss how they effectively pair together to create experiments and MVPs for new products. We’ll cover both how to approach an MVP, as well as tactical lessons for how design and engineering can collaborate closely.

We’ll kick things off with Jono and Ben giving a talk, and leave lots of room for Q&A from the group.

Hope to see you there,

Drink ‘n Code II

Drink ‘n Code is back by popular demand! Bring your laptop, grab a beer or a soda, hang out with fellow iOS devs, and above all, write some code.

This is a perfect chance to spend an hour or two on a side project, dig into that new library you’ve been meaning to check out, or get a question answered that’s been stumping you. Friends don’t let friends code alone, so interaction with others is encouraged — we’ll kick things off at the beginning with announcements from anyone who is looking for help on a problem, or wants to team up for the night. Developers of all experience levels are welcome.

We’ll be at Venmo‘s beautiful new office space this month — thanks to John, Bridgette, Kortina, and the rest of the team for hosting! Venmo is generously providing beer, soft drinks, and snacks. If you need dinner, grab something on the way over.

Around 9 pm we’ll head over to a nearby bar for more drinks.

RSVPs will open at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 10.

What people have said:

I have only attended 4 Hatchery events thus far but all have been top notch.

— Fred Kauber

Last night “Are You Serious?” event proved to be of outmost importance for our new venture: pricing model, competition, market segments – the panel addressed all of these and helped us to clarify our strategies. Many thanks to Yao for bringing in VCs who are on top of their game to critique us last night!

— Olga Bukur

The Hatchery is a ‘must go’ for up and coming entrepreneurs. Yao Huang has a wealth of information and knows everyone in the start-up community. Don’t hesitate to reach out to her or better yet, keep attending The Hatchery. I know I will.

— Paula Schafer

Great targeted information presented with humor and great energy.

— Gadge Brown

Terrific. Providing great learning opportunities as well as a chance to meet others in similar situations who may be able to assist one another

— anne bonfiglio

One of the best groups in NYC!

— Umit D. Sami

The Hatchery event was a fantastic forum for new ideas and constructive criticism. I felt like I was watching American Idol, except the stars were founders with fresh ideas and slick slide decks instead of warbling vocals. All the judges played Simon, delivering hard-hitting and incisive feedback about the presenter’s product and pitch. Time was of the essence and those onstage had five minutes exactly to communicate their concept in a meaningful way before the judges. Five minutes of critiquing followed, and frequently resulted in ‘Aha’ moments in the crowd. The event was well attended, with startup founders comprising roughly half of the hundred odd heads in the room. Overall, I had a great time, learned a lot about the art of pitching, and would definitely come back!

— Laura Yue Bai

Attending Hatchery are a great thing for anyone involved in NY’s tech community.

— Brian McClain

My first event, but with that being said it was a very nice mix of a professional event and social gathering – well organized, and thoughtfully put together – A+

— Attila Sary

This event is a great place to learn, prepare and even debate your business idea/model and see if it is viable for funding.

— Domenick Cilea

I thought the group was an energizing group of like minded people that I think can and do help each other in the common pursuit of building businesses and companies, I look forward to getting to know more people.

— Kevin Brown

Very good. I was pleasantly surprised by the attendance and amount of entrepreneurs. Great group.

Adrian

The ‘Are You Serious’ event is the perfect environment for entrepreneurs to practice their pitch and get valuable feedback, even make some significant connections. But remember, there are serious individuals in the audience, so don’t use it as your first opportunity to practice, prepare well in advance, making sure to incorporate feedback from experts. Having a presentation that is professional and well thought out will make a significant difference in terms of how potential investors and business partners perceive you in the audience. And done well, you can walk away with some great connections, we certainly did.

— Darlene Newman

This is the best meetup group in NYC for serious entrepreneurs. They always have great venues and good networking opportunities.

— Andrew Ward

A great way to network and meet other like minded individuals.

CVC Incubation

Update: I accidentally set this meetup to repeat every month. My bad!  It should be every 2 months.  I still need to confirm the date for May, so standby.  Really sorry for the inconvenience.  If you want a refund, email me at jeffnovich [at] gmail.com. Otherwise your RSVP will be fine for the next date.

Update 2: I just confirmed the date for May 21. Sorry about the confusion.  Also, to stay at this venue I need to raise the price to $10. For those who already paid, don’t worry about the difference.

=====

Come by if you have ideas with a potentially viable business model or just want to hear what people are working on.  This event puts entrepreneurs and “idea people” in a room to engage in intense, non-stop collaboration on how to start and grow a venture. The goal is to find a way to turn a concept into a viable business model that can lead to scalable growth.

Check out our last event:

Email me about making a suggestion for the topic at or we can play this one by ear.

It will be intimate:

This event will be capped at just 13 people.

Why does it cost money?

We are charging $10 per person as a way of ensuring you’re serious about coming… also

** THIS INCLUDES A FREE DRINK (wine, coffee, beer) **

Please join us and get your first drink through me.

Under new Management:

Alex Poon, who has been running this event for the last 2 years, has moved on to other CVC roles.  Jeff Novich will be taking over. That’s me.  This will be our first of many incubation events, so stay tuned.

A word about our venue:

I reached out to several coffee shops to find a venue that would host us and be cool about it.  “The Bean” is a lovely East Village coffee shop. I met with the owner, Sammy, and he’s happy to give us our own semi-private space – and waiter – in the back.

The Bean is reserving prime space for us for 2+ hours. Please order after you sit down so they can count what we spend.

Thanks! Looking forward to an interesting, engaging discussion.

Bring ideas!

State, Code, and Collaboration in the Cloud

Google Docs is a suite of productivity applications operating at global scale, capable of supporting a vast number of simultaneously open documents.  The applications all support Real Time Collaboration (RTC), where the edits made by one collaborator appear immediately on other collaborators’ document view.  The technical challenges in architecting such a product suite will be discussed, with an emphasis on the core technologies supporting RTC.

The Google Drive Realtime Collaboration API allows third party developers to leverage the same technology stack which underlies the RTC features of Google Docs.  It’s architecture, capabilities, and future direction will be discussed.

Google Apps Script is a cloud scripting platform, allowing third party developers to rapidly create scripts ranging from simple utilities to full scale workflow applications, all with the end users’ code running on Google servers.  A set of easy to use APIs are built into the product, allowing developers to easily orchestrate various Google services.  The unique challenges for security, testing and scalability posed by this product will be presented in detail, and recent launches of new features previewed at Google IO will be highlighted, with a look towards future product developments.

Michael Harm is a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Google. Mike joined Google in 2007 as a member of the Google Spreadsheets team, before creating Google Apps Script as a 20% project.  Since then, Mike has led the Apps Script project and co-leads the Docs / Drive third party developer platform.  Before joining Google, Mike worked for the Mount Sinai Medical Center, the Stanford School of Medicine, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, designing enterprise workflow applications and medical data repositories supporting clinical research. Mike has a Ph.D. in computer science, prefers cats to dogs, and bourbon to scotch.

Mock Negotiations: Negotiating with Big Media and Brands

Negotiating with Big Media and Brands

So you’ve built your product, you’ve raised your money, and now it’s time to close those strategic deals, get some traction and create growth.   In this mock negotiation a start-up company that has created a new disruptive product will try to get a major media company on board for a bet-the-company, make-it-or-break-it strategic deal.

If you loved our mock negotiations before, you’ll love this one.  Investors, media companies, and New York style entertainment lawyers – hot stuff.

We will cover issues that must be overcome when any early stage tech company tries to do business with a major media company, and some of the things on the major media company side for which entrepreneurs should be prepared; things like approved vendor lists, conflicts with other technologies and companies already owned or controlled by the media company, contract negotiation issues, ballooning legal bills and how to deal with them, etc.

Tom Chernaik, Co-Founder, Cmp.ly, (playing the role of CEO, Bit Music)

Josh Sessler, Partner, CDAS, as counsel

Kathleen Utecht, Senior Associate, Comcast Ventures (playing role of Chief Digital Officer for Zorin Industries Entertainment Group)

Steve Masur, Partner, CDAS, as counsel

Happy hour to follow at 5pm :)
