GE Fantasizes We’ll All Be 3D Printing Dog Snacks By 2025
Obviously, Betabeat is very excited about the future (at least until the Singularity comes and we’re all bossed about by robots). Hence our interest in GE’s “Home 2025″ concept designs (via Dvice), which predict what yuppies’ kitchens will look like a decade or so from now.
“This isn’t about the Jetsons or pie in the sky ideas,” explained Lou Lenzi, director for GE Appliances’ Industrial Design Operation, but “reality-based innovation that will be possible over the next decade.”
The results are basically a big Sharper Image catalog, but with more sensors.
The company’s appliances team (Jack Donaghy says hi, btw) dreamed up a set of illustrations that include a sink that’ll scan your veggies for chemicals and sense how dehydrated you are, as well as a weird laundry system where your clothing is washed and stored in little pellets, then “revived” with some sort of steamer.
There’s even an “urban grilling” contraption so city dwellers don’t feel totally left out. “Convenient window mounted unit uses powerful, yet compact, mechanisms to draw smoke out of the living space, allowing for grilling convenience.”
Of course, they also integrated the fad futurist product of the moment: 3D printers, for both ”edible and non-edible” uses. Sure, you could 3D print a replacement for that broken plate. But it’s the giant medical device that’ll take your vitals and dispense proper amounts of meds that tips us off as to who this house is really designed for–baby boomers. What are these big companies gonna do once they have to start marketing to broke-ass millennials?
