Matt Mullenweg, WordPress, Automattic

Matt is an entrepreneur living in San Francisco and NYC. He is the founding developer of the popular open-source blogging software WordPress. After leaving CNET, he has devoted the majority of his time to developing a number of open source projects and is a frequent speaker at conferences, such as Canada’s Northern Voice and the WordCamp events organized around WordPress software. In late 2005, he founded Automattic, the business behind WordPress.com and Akismet. Matt has done investing in the following startups: DailyBurn, SendGrid, BranchOut, Hipmunk, Getaround, Summly, BlackJet, SmartThings, Crowdtilt, and many more. Mullenweg attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where he studied jazz saxophone.

Mike Maples Sr. is an investor and rancher. Maples worked at Microsoft from 1988 until 1995 inside the Office of the President and as Executive Vice President of the Worldwide Products Group. Startup Grind Toronto: Bob Dorf, author of “Startup Owner’s Manual” on July 30th, 2013.

Bob Dorf is likely the second most knowledgeable Customer Development expert on the planet, second only to his business partner, co-author and friend of 20 years, Steve Blank, who developed the methodology after retiring from his eighth startup, E.piphany, when it achieved a market cap of $8-billion.  Dorf helped Steve Blank deploy and test the Customer Development process when E.piphany opened its doors with five employees in 1996. Dorf later critiqued the earliest versions of Steve’s Four Steps to the Epiphany mercilessly along the way, and they’ve been friends and colleagues ever since. Dorf lives in Stamford with his wife Fran, a therapist and thrice-published novelist. Startup Grind Silicon Valley: Bill Maris, Managing Partner at Google Ventures on July 31th, 2013.

Bill is the managing partner of Google Ventures, where he and his team are seeking out new technologies, startups, and disruptive ideas. He brings with him a combination of technical expertise and hands on startup experience, including founding Web hosting pioneer Burlee.com (now part of Web.com), where he built much of the key computing, network, and technological infrastructure. Prior to that, Bill was a biotechnology and healthcare portfolio manager for Stockholm, Sweden-based Investor AB. Bill’s background also includes research at the Duke University Medical Center, Department of Neurobiology with a focus on molecular and behavioral neuroscience. Founded in 1989 by Michael J. Saylor and Sanju K. Startup Grind LA: Scot Rubin, cofounder of G4 Network on August 14th, 2013.

Rubin is the founder of All Games Productions, All Games Network, and co-founder of the G4 television network, in addition to being a talk show host and television producer. AllGames launched in 1996, and in 2000 Rubin was hired as a consultant for Comcast to develop a 24-7 cable TV channel about video games. As co-founder of G4 Media, Rubin served as VP of Internet and Program Development. Rubin also served as a Producer on the first 3 seasons of the EA Sports Madden Challenge, and play by play guy for the first two Madden Challenge Finals.

Startup Grind Seattle: Ben Huh, Cheezburger on August 28th, 2013.

Khosla co-founded Sun Microsystems (SUN is the acronym for the Stanford University Network), along with Stanford classmates Scott McNealy, Andy Bechtolsheim, and UC Berkeley computer science graduate student Bill Joy. Khosla served as the first chairman and CEO of Sun Microsystems from 1982 to 1984, when he left the company to become a venture capitalist. In 1986, Khosla joined the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as a general partner. At Kleiner, Khosla became a recognized venture capitalist, with several successful early stage investments.
