Salesforce.com And HP Have A New Partnership With A Cool New Name (CRM)

Marc Benioff

One of the first big things HP CEO Meg Whitman did to try and turn HP around (besides laying off 29,000 people) was to clear out some of the old, archaic tech that employees were using and bring in cloud computing.

That’s why HP became a Salesforce.com customer about two years ago (as well as Workday).

HP, with over 300,000 employees worldwide, was one of largest customers that Salesforce.com had ever landed at that time.

On Monday, the two companies came up with a new way to work together: a project called “Superpod.”

The Superpod is HP’s private area in Salesforce.com’s data center where Salesforce’s software will run on HP’s hardware.

Salesforce.com has never done this for another customer.

Sharing the hardware and software (in geek speak “multitenancy”) is what Salesforce.com is all about. Sharing is how cloud computing saves money over traditional, on-premises computing.

But HP is such a big customer that it can get it’s own Superpod, Benioff told analysts in a quarterly conference call.

What’s more HP will help Salesforce.com sell Superpods to other huge enterprises. Such VIP treatment will only be offered to the biggest customers, Benioff said.

We’ll see if the Superpod brings more huge customers to Salesforce, or generates much new revenue to HP. It could. We still like the project’s name.

HP could maybe name more of its products like that: SuperWin (a Windows 8 PC); SuperDroid (A Chromebook), SuperServ (a new server) …

AdClarity shows advertisers and publishers how much their competitors are spending — and making

Force Factor, the performance supplement company whose Test 180 Ignite product promises to increase your testosterone 99 percent and make you “100 percent man,” spent at least $ 1.7 million on ads at ESPN.com last quarter, beating out Cadillac, AT&T, Google’s Chromebook, and Red Bull to be the current reigning champion of the sports sites’ prestigious advertiser list.

How do I know?

New York ad startup BiScience’s new product, AdClarity, monitors 5.1 million ads in over two million campaigns from over 300,000 advertisers on over 7,000 publishers’ sites. And AdClarity connects with major ad inventory exchanges, monitoring pricing. By combining the two, the tool gets a very good look at what has traditionally been very obscure data: How much your competition is spending (if you’re an advertiser), and how much your competition is making (if you’re a publisher).

The number of campaigns on ESPN’s global sites

Using Ad Clarity data, for example, you can tell that Yahoo probably made north of $ 7.5 million last month on its home page alone, with four campaigns, an average CPM of $ 1.10, and 168 million pageviews. Or that ESPN’s average CPM was higher, at $ 1.39, and that its U.S. site alone ran 609 campaigns in the last three months for its 35 million monthly visitors.

That’s astonishing information — and very valuable.

I wondered to BiScience CEO Kfir Moyal who it was most valuable to: agencies, publishers, or advertisers?

“I think advertisers/agencies are the sweetest spots as it plays a key consideration for them while planning and deploying campaigns,” Moyal said. “Having said that, publishers always like to compare monetization alternatives and profitability so their use case is pretty strong as well.”

Agencies can use the tool to plan their media spend, Moyal said, while in-house advertisers can cut out the ad exchange middlemen and deal directly with publishers — with a lot more intelligence to inform their negotiations.

How exactly does AdClarity manage this?

Moyal didn’t want to get into exact details, but essentially the company maintains its own proprietary RTB (real-time bidding) engine which is integrated with multiple ad inventory sources. Essentially, the company knows what advertisers are paying and publishers are making by having a seat at the table during the lightning-fast digital negotiations, and seeing who has the winning bid. In addition, the company monitors thousands of publishers pages to see what actually runs

Hence the fine-grained, specific information.

That data is sliceable by day, week, and month, and also provides trending information, Moyal said, which is helpful to advertisers who are planning campaigns.

Salesforce And HP Join To Offer Superpod, A Dedicated Hosted Service

Meg Whitman | CrunchBase Profile

Salesforce.com and HP are forming an alliance to create what they call a “Superpod,” that will provide customers with HP’s converged hardware to run on the SaaS provider’s infrastructure. HP CEO Meg Whitman will announce the news on stage tomorrow at Dreamforce with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.

The superpod converged infrastructure, designed by HP, is what IT calls a converged infrastructure. It runs compute, storage and networking all in one box as opposed to running across a distributed infrastructure such as with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The new offering is meant for very large companies that have extensive IT infrastructure which require enterprise integrations and a level of compliance that can be guaranteed by having the SaaS environment all in one box.

For HP, the company can now package its expensive hardware with the Salesforce SaaS technology. And Salesforce gets a way to move deeper inside large, corporations with the promise of a single, dedicated solution.

In a prepared statement, Whitman described a “new style of IT,” that combines HP’s hardware technology with Salesforce cloud services.

HP is banking on selling its converged infrastructure as a way to get deeper into the enterprise with what they have called a a private cloud service.  In this case. HP is bringing the IT to Salesforce, a move that demonstrates how Salesforce is changing to accomodate larger companies by partnering with legacy enterprise providers. Earlier this year, Salesforce inked a deal with Oracle to purchase the software giant’s converged database technology to run its SaaS offerings.

At the cruz of this, is Salesforce new stage of development, which leverages its platform and third-part ecosystem with technology that would normally be found in a corporate data center.  For HP, the deal makes it more appealing as companies can access the services Salesforce offers through data center style, big box machines.

We use Twitter to stay on top of current events, social activity and whatever else we’re checking out as we obsessively refresh it all day. So why not use it to stay on top of the latest in sex news and erotica?

Whether you want your feed to contain an orgiastic flood of titillating tweets, or you’re just looking for a lingerie blog or two, Betabeat has you covered. After all, there’s no harm in a little bit of sex advice or a hot photo to pass the time while you’re waiting in line at Starbucks.

One Of The World’s Largest Bitcoin Businesses Temporarily Ran Out of Bitcoins To Sell

coinbase

Bitcoin had an insane day, rising more than $ 140, on volumes of close to 1 million transactions.

As a result, Coinbase, which acts as the market-making intermediary for hundreds of retail outlets who accept Bitcoin, reached its buying limit.

Here’s the message the site left to clients an hour ago as transcribed by ycominbator:

Due to higher than normal buy volumes, we are unable to provide exact price quotes right now.

Instead of pausing buys entirely, we decided to give people the option to purchase bitcoin at the market price in a few days. Once your USD funds arrive, we will exchange them to bitcoin at the market price at approximately Friday Nov 22, 2013 at 07:56AM PST.

Note that you can cancel your order at any time up until your bitcoin arrive from the transfer history page.

The market price of bitcoin changes frequently. Below are some recent prices to give you an idea. These do not guarantee what the price will be in a few days.”

Insanity.

LIVE: The Senate Bitcoin Hearing

Capitol Hill Washington DCThe Senate Committee On Homeland Security And Governmental Affairs will hold a hearing called “Beyond Silk Road: Potential Risks, Threats, and Promises of Virtual Currencies” at 3 pm today.

You can watch it live here »

We’ve previously discussed how the Feds basically know nothing about Bitcoin, so the hearing is more of a fact-finding forum.

But the combination of Bitcoin’s rise in price and the seizure of massive illicit e-commerce site Silk Road, on which Bitcoin was the primary medium of exchange, has put it in the sights of regulators. (A site billing itself as the new version of Silk Road has already gone live.)

Whether or not virtual currencies prove to be a boom or a bust, I think it’s clear that some folks just want a chance to try and play by the rules,” Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) said in his published opening remarks. “That’s difficult to do if the rules or proper authorities aren’t clear or if the future is uncertain.  It’s also difficult if a large number of bad apples are allowed to spoil the bunch.”

We’ll be updating this space with news from the hearing. Of course, we’ll also have our eye on prices.
