2. Transit troubles in SF: Sorry to our San Francisco-based startup friends, as the union representing BART transit workers has called for a system-wide strike today. With roughly 400,000 commuters the BART is one of the biggest U.S. transit centers. Additional ferries should be in service and the city plans to keep open carpool lanes all day, not just for rush hour. Also, here’s a sweet deal: Drivers who pick up riders may get gift cards for coffee. (San Francisco, August 5)

3. Pitch like a pro: Learn to make a great first impression at Pitch Perfect, organized by Software Startups Raleigh. Get immediate feedback and experience speaking in front of a group as you pitch in an open forum format. (Raleigh, N.C., August 5)

4. Calling all TechStars: This two-part, New Tech event is getting tech entrepreneurs together to network and share new ideas. New Tech is also creating a Colorado directory of startups and supporting companies, and wants you to register. (Boulder, Colo., August 5 – 6)

5. Wisdom and free lunch in NYC: Check out the Small Business Summit where small business owners and influencers will help each other grow through the power of shared wisdom. This event has been going strong for eight years. See what all the fuss is about — and get a free lunch. (New York City, August 6)

6. Shape the future of justice: The Fourth Estate Leadership Summit is a conference focused on promoting justice and equality for all. Intended for students and educators looking to make a difference in their communities and around the world, this program aims to provide tools necessary to prompt social change. Expect hands-on workshops, new Invisible Children media and an epic dance party. (Los Angeles, August 8 – 11)

7. Illuminate your idea connections: TedxYakima, a Ted affiliate speaker series is hosting a diverse group of enlightened thinkers from rainforest activist, Sarah Augustine, to former Marine, Josh Elliot. The theme of this speaker series is ‘Illuminating Connections’ and the ways people can make their ideas come to life. (Yakima, Wash., August 9)

8. Toronto’s first Startup Weekend EDU: Startup Weekend EDU is a unique opportunity for socially-minded treps interested in education. It’s similar to Startup Weekend’s traditional program, except at EDU teams will pitch ideas that focus on solving some of the toughest problems facing formal education. Instead of local entrepreneurs, the panel of judges and mentors will consist of educators, school leaders, and children. (Toronto, August 9 – 11)
